Korean Contemporary Artists Series YOON Seungjoong
Architecture, Drawing As Sentence Construction The third installment of the Korean Contemporary Artists Series is an exhibition of architecture, surveying the overall work of architect YOON Seungjoong, who has laid the foundation of modern Korean architecture with a wide-ranging body of work, including the Supreme Court of South Korea (1989) and the Natural Sciences Campus at Sungkyunkwan University (1979). On display are some 150 articles: blueprints, sketches, scale models, and texts, evoking the architect as if in a dialogue with himself and illuminating the substance of his architectural world. A “sentence” is an expression of one’s thoughts in a set of textual elements, based on the sociocultural properties of language. Meaning is delivered only when the system and order of compositional logic are respected. As if telling a story, an architect depicts life by drawing a blueprint and engraves his sentences in the form of architecture in throughout a city. In an era seized by images, he ignites the meaning of text so as to speak of the attitude toward the city and the courtesy for people that the language of architecture must express.
